ESG in Action: From Shanghai to Abuja

The ESG Profession Is Changing: Why Tomorrow’s Sustainability Professionals Need to Understand Finance

What skills will the next generation of ESG professionals need?
For several years, rapid growth in sustainability regulation and reporting created significant demand for professionals who understood disclosure frameworks, carbon accounting, materiality and ESG data. Those capabilities remain important. But the sustainability profession is expanding beyond reporting.Increasingly, ESG professionals are expected to understand how sustainability connects with finance, investment, risk management, strategy and commercial decision-making.That evolution is one of the themes explored in the latest Fran ESG Podcast with Chukwudi Iwuozor, ESG Tuareg. From reporting ESG to using ESG In Beyond Compliance: How ESG Shapes Investment Decisions, Francine Carron and Chukwudi discuss what happens when ESG information leaves the sustainability department and becomes part of an investment decision. For sustainability professionals, that distinction matters.Producing an ESG assessment is one capability. Understanding how an investor, CFO, investment committee or senior management team might use that information is another. The latter requires professionals who can translate sustainability issues into the language of:risk; capital; investment; business performance; resilience; and opportunity. ESG and finance are becoming increasingly connected Sustainable finance, responsible investment, private equity and development finance are creating career paths that sit at the intersection of sustainability and finance.Environmental and social specialists may find themselves evaluating potential investments.Investment professionals increasingly need to understand sustainability risks.Companies need people who can translate ESG information into commercially meaningful insights. And senior sustainability professionals increasingly need enough financial literacy to participate effectively in conversations about strategy and capital allocation. The result is an ESG employment market in which multidisciplinary professionals can become particularly valuable. What skills should ESG professionals develop? The conversation with Chukwudi raises an important question for anyone planning a sustainability career:What will differentiate ESG professionals over the next decade?Technical ESG knowledge alone may not be sufficient.Professionals can benefit from developing complementary capabilities in areas such as financial analysis, risk management, strategy, data, stakeholder engagement and sector-specific expertise.Just as importantly, they need to be able to communicate sustainability issues in terms that decision-makers outside the ESG function understand.Opportunities in Africa and emerging markets The episode also explores ESG across Africa and emerging markets. As investment, infrastructure development and sustainable finance continue to evolve across these markets, organisations will require professionals capable of understanding both international ESG expectations and local business realities. That creates opportunities for professionals with international perspectives, strong technical capabilities and an ability to work across different regulatory, economic and cultural environments.
Listen to the conversation 🎙️ Beyond Compliance: How ESG Shapes Investment Decisions Guest: Chukwudi Iwuozor — ESG Tuareg Host: Francine Carron
The episode explores ESG and investment, sustainable and development finance, environmental and social risk, emerging markets and the capabilities the next generation of ESG professionals will need.🎧 Available on Spotify through the Fran ESG Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7eS5M6yV1ttAfVSQG9JxJr?si=89WFj6kFQiGUUQ5M8YL_-QAt ESG Employment , we connect sustainability expertise with organisations looking for the people capable of turning ESG ambitions into action.

The ESG Profession Is Changing: Why Tomorrow’s Sustainability Professionals Need to Understand Finance

End of Summer, Start of Something BiggerSummer may be coming to an end, but there has been very little slowing down for Us.In our previous newsletter, we invited you to discover Hainan from a different perspective and explore how China and particularly the Hainan Free Trade Port is finding its place in the global sustainability conversation. (Continue watching the episodes via the youtube links below.)This month, we continue that international perspective, while also sharing some important developments closer to home: a new milestone for ESG Academy, the continued expansion of our international expert network, preparations for the Air Cargo & Logistics Forum Shanghai, important developments for ANSPs working with GreenATM — and something much bigger happening across our businesses.

Episode FiveThe Economics of SportIn Episode 5 of Visions on the Hainan Free Trade Port, the roundtable explored how sport can become an economic driver for Hainan. From proposals for international marathons to the importance of building a strong local sports culture, the discussion looked beyond the game itself to tourism, investment, jobs, and international visibility. Our Founder & CEO, Francine Carron, cited Sanya’s previous Formula E event as evidence that Hainan is not starting from scratch. The opportunity is to build on what already exists and use sport as another tool for sustainable tourism, economic development, and global positioning.

Episode 6From Tomorrowland to Hainan: The Power of IPIn Episode 6 of Visions on the Hainan Free Trade Port, the roundtable explored intellectual property and how an idea can become an economic asset. IP is much more than patents and trademarks; it can be an event, an experience, a cultural identity, or even the brand of a place. Our Founder & CEO, Francine Carron, brought the discussion back to Belgium and used Tomorrowland as an example of how a festival can grow into a globally recognized brand, creating value far beyond the event itself through tourism, employment, media and international exposure. The question for Hainan was therefore simple: what could Hainan create that one day becomes globally recognized IP of its own?

Episode SevenA Coconut Is Not Just a CoconutIn Episode 7 of Visions on the Hainan Free Trade Port, the roundtable turned to one of Hainan’s most recognizable symbols: the coconut. Our Founder & CEO, Francine Carron, used the simple “economics of a coconut” to explain value creation. Sell a coconut as a raw agricultural product and it has one value. Transform it into coconut water, oil, cosmetics, or other products; use more of its by-products; add branding, sustainability, and international market access—and suddenly the same coconut represents an entire value chain. The coconut became an analogy for Hainan itself: the opportunity is not simply to use what the island already has, but to create greater, more sustainable value from it.

Episode EightWhy People Come to Hainan, and Why They StayIn the final episode of Visions on the Hainan Free Trade Port, the discussion became more personal: what actually makes people choose to stay in Hainan? Our Founder & CEO, Francine Carron, explained that policies may initially attract people and businesses, but they are not necessarily what makes them stay. Hainan offers an unusual combination: you can build an international business, study Chinese, enjoy the tropical weather, surf, meet an international community, and still develop professionally all in the same place. For Francine, this is an important part of Hainan’s competitive advantage. Policies can attract talent, but community, opportunity, and quality of life are what turn a business destination into a place people want to call home.
From Hainan to Rwanda: Sustainability Looks Different Everywhere
Over the summer, we continued sharing perspectives on sustainability from very different parts of the world. Our Vision of Hainan Free Trade Port series offered another look at Hainan and the transformation taking place around us in China. But we didn’t only highlight Hainan.Through our FranESG podcast, we traveled virtually to Rwanda to explore sustainable tourism and what sustainability looks like when environmental protection, communities, economic development, and tourism have to work together.Different countries. Different sectors. Different realities. But one common message:There is no single sustainability transition.Understanding the local context is what turns ESG from theory into something that actually works.🎧 Listen to our Spotify Sustainable Tourism episode here or watch via YouTube.

Keep Learning: A Milestone for ESG AcademyFor some, school has already started again. For others, there are still a few precious weeks of summer left. Either way, we have one recommendation: Keep learning. ESG is changing too quickly for sustainability knowledge to stand still. And this summer, we reached an important milestone of our own.We are very proud to announce that the ESG Academy trademark has now officially been registered. What began as an idea to make complex ESG knowledge practical and understandable has developed into a growing education business delivering training for companies, professionals and teams navigating sustainability in practice. From European ESG regulation and sustainable procurement to aviation, carbon, reporting and international market access, ESG Academy is designed around one principle:People should leave knowing what to do differently — not simply knowing more terminology.🎓 Discover ESG Academy

Our International Expert Network Is GrowingWe are also continuing to expand our international network of freelance ESG specialists. As our projects become increasingly international and specialized, we are looking for experienced, independent professionals to join us on assignments across markets and ESG disciplines. We are particularly interested in specialists across sustainability reporting, carbon, climate, sustainable finance, supply chains, aviation, mining, social sustainability, GHG calculators, airport carbon verifiers, ESG regulation, and related technical areas.Freelancers must be able to work independently and invoice professionally, including holding the appropriate VAT/tax registration for their jurisdiction. Time for an upgrade: Welcome to Carron® ESG Group 🌍

Sustainable Tourism: How Rwanda Is Proving That Conservation and Communities Can Thrive TogetherWhen people think about sustainable tourism, they often picture eco-lodges, reusable water bottles, or offsetting carbon emissions. While these initiatives matter, truly sustainable tourism goes much further. At its best, tourism becomes a catalyst for protecting nature, strengthening local communities, and creating long-term economic opportunities. That was one of the central messages during my conversation with Innocent Twagiramukiza, Founder of Green Hills Ecotours in Rwanda, on the Fran ESG Podcast. His story demonstrates that tourism is not simply about visiting beautiful places; it can become a powerful force for sustainable development.Tourism as a Driver of Conservation Tourism is sometimes criticised for placing pressure on fragile ecosystems. However, Innocent argues that the opposite can also be true. When local communities directly benefit from tourism, protecting wildlife and natural resources becomes an economic opportunity rather than a restriction.Communities that once depended on activities such as poaching can instead build sustainable livelihoods through conservation, guiding visitors, hospitality, agriculture, and cultural experiences.Instead of asking communities to choose between nature and survival, responsible tourism aligns both objectives.Local Communities Must BenefitOne of the strongest messages from our discussion was simple:Sustainable tourism only works when local people benefit. For Innocent, this means ensuring that tourism revenue remains within the community.Visitors are encouraged to experience authentic Rwanda—not only through wildlife but also through local businesses, family-owned enterprises, coffee farms, tea plantations, culture and everyday life. When communities become partners rather than spectators, tourism creates ownership, pride and resilience. From Coffee Farm to Coffee CupOne particularly inspiring initiative is Better World Coffee, founded by Innocent to connect travellers directly with Rwanda’s coffee-growing communities.Rather than simply buying a bag of coffee, visitors experience the complete journey from growing and harvesting the beans to roasting and brewing them. The initiative creates a deeper appreciation for the people behind every cup while ensuring more value remains with local farmers. It is an excellent example of how tourism, agriculture and entrepreneurship can reinforce one another.Sustainable Tourism Is Good Business Sustainability is often viewed as a cost.In reality, Innocent demonstrates that it can become a competitive advantage.Responsible tourism creates:

employment opportunities

stronger local economies

protection of biodiversity

preservation of culture

authentic visitor experiences

long-term destination resilience

These outcomes are not mutually exclusive—they reinforce one another.A Lesson for Every IndustryAlthough our conversation focused on tourism, the broader lesson applies to every business.Whether you operate in manufacturing, aviation, logistics or hospitality, sustainability creates the greatest impact when environmental protection, economic development and social inclusion work together.Sustainability should never be viewed as choosing between people and the planet. It is about creating systems where both can flourish.Listen to the Full ConversationIn the latest episode of the Fran ESG Podcast, Innocent Twagiramukiza shares how Rwanda is demonstrating that tourism can become a driver of conservation, entrepreneurship and community development. If you’re interested in sustainable tourism, ESG, community engagement or responsible business, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.🎧 Listen now on Spotify.

ESG Is Becoming the Global Business Language: Insights from Hainan International Innovation EcosystemLast week, ESG Consultancy participated in the Fullsing Open House in Hainan, an international event bringing together entrepreneurs, innovators, government representatives, policy leaders, and international talent shaping the future of the Hainan Free Trade Port.During the event, Francine Carron, General Manager of Haikou ESG Sustainable Consultancy, shared insights on one of the most important shifts currently taking place in international business:ESG is rapidly evolving from a sustainability topic into a global business language.ESG Is No Longer Optional in International TradeFor many years, companies viewed ESG primarily as a reporting exercise, a branding topic, or a compliance requirement limited to large multinational corporations. That reality is changing rapidly.Today, international buyers, investors, regulators, and supply chain partners increasingly expect companies to demonstrate:* Governance structures * Sustainability strategies * Carbon management * Supply chain transparency * Labor and social standards * Risk management systems * Long-term resilienceIn many industries, especially those connected to Europe and global supply chains, ESG discussions now happen before discussions around price, delivery, or contracts. This is why ESG is increasingly becoming part of market access itself.Companies that understand this transformation early are positioning themselves more competitively for the future global economy. Why This Matters for Chinese and International CompaniesThe event in Hainan highlighted a growing reality: Chinese companies are rapidly internationalizing, while international companies are looking more closely at Asia for innovation, manufacturing, partnerships, and growth. At the same time, European sustainability regulations such as CSRD, supply chain due diligence requirements, and investor expectations are creating new pressures across global value chains. This means that companies outside Europe are increasingly affected by European ESG expectations. For businesses operating internationally, ESG readiness is becoming a strategic advantage. This includes:* Preparing for ESG questionnaires from international buyers * Improving ESG governance structures * Understanding sustainability reporting expectations * Strengthening supply chain transparency * Aligning operations with international market requirements * Building long-term resilience and investor confidenceHainan’s Role in International Innovation and SustainabilityOne of the strongest impressions from the event was the level of momentum surrounding international cooperation and innovation in Hainan. The Hainan Free Trade Port is rapidly developing into an internationally connected ecosystem that supports:* Entrepreneurship * Innovation * International talent attraction * Cross-border business development * Sustainable economic growth * International education and collaborationGovernment authorities, international talent platforms, innovation parks, and entrepreneurship ecosystems are actively working together to create an attractive environment for global professionals and companies. This creates significant opportunities for international cooperation between China, Europe, and global markets.ESG as a Strategic Business ToolAt ESG Consultancy, we increasingly see ESG moving away from theoretical sustainability discussions toward practical business implementation.Today, ESG influences:* Market access * Buyer relationships * Investment decisions * Supply chain partnerships * Corporate resilience * International competitivenessCompanies that fail to adapt may increasingly face barriers in international trade and procurement processes.Companies that proactively build ESG capability can strengthen their positioning, improve trust with international partners, and create long-term competitive advantages.Building Bridges Between China and EuropeAs a consultancy operating between Europe and China, ESG Consultancy focuses on helping organizations navigate the changing international ESG landscape. Our work includes:* ESG strategy development * CSRD readiness * Supply chain sustainability * ESG training and education * Sustainable aviation advisory * International ESG communication * ESG market readiness * Cross-border sustainability advisoryThe bridge between China and Europe is becoming increasingly important as sustainability expectations continue to evolve globally. The Future of International BusinessThe conversations taking place today in Hainan reflect a broader global transformation.Sustainability, resilience, governance, innovation, and international cooperation are increasingly shaping the future of business and trade.ESG is no longer a future topic. It is already becoming part of how global business operates today. And companies that recognize this early will be best positioned for the next phase of international growth.⸻Francine Carron is the General Manager of Haikou ESG Sustainable Consultancy and founder of ESG Consultancy,
